Comenius Project

The title of the project is: “Discovering Europe through its waters”. The underlined program aims to help pupils to discover Europe by themselves. The project partners (Austria, France, Italy, Turkey) will work to create a map of Europe designed through a boat trip from Vienna to Reunion, via the Danube River, the Black Sea, the Bosphorus canal, the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Oceans, thus stressing the importance water and sea have in the culture of every country. Every stop of the trip corresponds to a partner country. The trip will be testified by a ship log with impressions, scientific investigations and reflections upon the different cultures. The main idea is that cultures are discovered by other cultures and not that cultures are presented to other cultures. So each school will send videos, pictures and sounds to the pupils of the other schools every four months and these documents will be the starting point for a deeper investigation. Workshops during 4 meetings will be the opportunity to exchange impressions among pupils.

Workflow

The approach used to achieve our objectives will be as follows:

  • Every 4 months participating partners will take turn in sending pictures, visuals and sounds stressing the importance of waters. Using these documents as a starting point, students of the other countries will make investigations in the following subjects : history, geography, literature, art, biology, and geology. Through these investigations students will report personal impressions by creating products (pictures, videos, music, poetry, literature texts, scientific reports). All this will be written in English in the ship log which will accompany them throughout the journey.
  • 4 meetings will be organized (in Austria, Turkey, Italia and Reunion Island), respecting the route of the journey. Every meeting will be the occasion to exchange the impressions collected during the journey (as the passengers of the ship do). Exchanges will be carried out in workshops based on different methods and approaches (theatre, writing, debates, …) thus helping pupils to express their diversity and creativity
  • The language of communication will be English

Goals

Every objective of the project aims to make students better European citizens. Concrete objectives are:

  • To enable pupils to discover Europe themselves and to promote a better understanding of cultures by defeating misconceptions, prejudices and hostilities (history, art, literature)
  • To develop the comprehension of the complexity and the fragility of human environments (geology, biology)
  • To improve the knowledge of the English language by exchanging and sharing information (English, ICT)
  • To give the students the idea that learning can happen everywhere and also in informal ways (Lifelong Learning Process) We intend to discover every partner country, step by step, through sailing the Danube River, the Black Sea, the Bosphorus canal, the Aegean Sea, the Mediteranean Sea, and the Oceans to Reunion Island.
